Nomad Pizza Company

From its modest beginning as a food truck, Nomad Pizza has exploded into a three-unit operation — two in Philly, and one in Hopewell, New Jersey. A Princeton, New Jersey, spot is scheduled to open in spring 2016. It’s sought-after Neapolitan- and Roman-style pizzas offer a few unique specialties at each location, many featuring local produce and meats. The Locust Street location is named Nomad Roman and serves up the namesake style. Each menu is focused on pizza, salads, antipasti and desserts –– that’s it. The 7th Street pizzeria features a Blanco Haze with mozzarella di bufala, red onion, San Marzano tomatoes, Parmesan, basil and sea salt ($15). Nomad Roman offers the Trenton Tomato Pie, an upside-down pizza with mozzarella, Italian tomatoes, oregano, garlic, crushed red peppers, parmigiana and basil ($13).

Capofitto Pizza + Gelato

Owner Stephanie Reitano’s house-made Capogiro Gelato is famous in the City of Brotherly Love. In 2014, she brought that same passion for Italian perfection to a Neapolitan pizzeria with a showpiece wood-burning dome oven. The Diavola has become a fast favorite around town with San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte, spicy Calabrese, EVOO, Pecorino Romano and basil ($16). Capofitto also serves Neapolitan-style calzones, like the Ripieno Bianco filled with ricotta, provola, bitter greens, capers, olives, Pecorino Romano and Sicilian extra-virgin olive oil ($18). Gelato, Italian craft beer and wines, cocktails, charcuterie, formaggi, insalata and house-made bakery items round out its menu.

Santucci’s Original Square Pizza

The Santucci family has been serving up its square pies with the sauce on top to South Philly since 1959. In addition to its coveted square pizza, the pizzeria also boasts some well-regarded sandwiches like the Braised Short Rib with fontina and exotic mushrooms ($11). The house meatballs are made with beef, veal and wild boar and offered as Spaghetti & Meatballs ($12). Santucci’s also opens in the morning with an extensive breakfast menu.
