It’s officially barbecue season. The flavors of grilled and smoked meats, veggies and cheese take their rightful place in the American palate. Consider introducing a pizza special that satisfies summer BBQ cravings.
Capturing barbecue season on a pizza can be as simple as using grilled or smoked meat favorites, such as chicken, pulled pork, beef brisket, bratwurst and even pork belly.
Accompany meats with fresh summer produce, like corn, tomatoes, peppers, summer squash, zucchini, green chilis, berries, peaches, cherries and melons.
A summer special wouldn’t be complete without tapping into all those seasonal flavors with a killer sauce. The sauce that screams summertime is barbecue. But several other sauces can round out your seasonal offerings. Herb-based sauces, such as pesto and Chimichurri capitalize on fresh leaves. Infuse aioli (think horseradish, lemon herb, chipotle or cilantro lime).
Barbecue Chicken Pizza Remixed
A BBQ chicken pizza is now a classic. Traditionally, the pizza is topped with BBQ sauce, shredded chicken, red onions, mozzarella and cilantro – but that doesn’t mean your special needs to be classic. Let’s intensify the flavors more with hot sauce, jalapenos and smoked Gouda.
- 8-10-ounce dough ball
- 1 whole boneless, skinless chicken breast, grilled or baked and cut into strips
- ⅔ cup 75%/25% blend of barbeque sauce and hot sauce
- ½ cup grilled red onion and green pepper
- ½ cup jalapeños
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella
- ½ cup shredded smoked Gouda
- Cilantro
